Exploring the Oldest City in Europe

Plovdiv is the 2019 European Capital of Culture. It wasn't our plan to be here during this celebration of culture and creativity but I AM SO GLAD that we are!

Here is photo gallery run through of our time in the oldest city in Europe and some surrounding day trips.

The Dzhumaya Mosque in the centre of Plovdiv.

Beautiful old buildings in downtown, Jim says they're an eye sore - I say they're charming!

Creative murals in Plovdiv's creative district, Kapana.

Bachkovo Monastery. Wonderful religious murals set in some stunning countryside.

The Red Church outside of Plovdiv in Perushtitsa.

Plovdiv has 6 hills and we managed to conquer them all!

Riverside and Plovidv Oldtown.

One of the highlights of history in Plovdiv is the old Roman theatre. We missed the summertime event calendar where many concerts and live events take place in the amphitheatre.

Heading to the countryside and hiking in the Rhodope Mountains

Seeing the beauty in Eastern European train stations - sunshine certainly helps!

A city break in the capital Sofia. 25kph on those electric scooters was far too fast, especially when tram lines are encountered!

And lastly our time in Plovdiv, Bulgaria was topped off by some stunning sunsets! If I had to be picky I would like to see some pink clouds but really I'm not complaining :-D
